A Waitakere man has admitted raping a woman on the West Coast after escaping from prison.
Christchurch District Court was told today William Spring Tawhai, 40, unemployed, escaped from Christchurch's Paparua Prison on October 11 last year and sexually violated the woman in Greymouth two days later, the Christchurch court news website reported.
He pleaded guilty today to sexual violation, escaping from prison, and assaulting two police officers.
Defence counsel David Bunce made no application for bail for Tawhai.
Judge Jane Farish remanded Tawhai in custody for sentencing on May 29. She ordered a pre-sentence report and a victim impact report.
No facts relating to the charges were read in court.
