One man who says he's lucky to have his house still intact after the Port Hills blaze is making sure fire fighters know how thankful he is for their efforts.
Roger Beattie has put up a large sign with the words 'thank you' on in the yard of his Early Valley Road home.
He said helicopters are still constantly flying overhead working on the fire, and he wanted to get his message across.
The blaze, which began on Monday and has destroyed 11 homes, started only six metres from the boundary of Beattie's house.
He said he was evacuated from his home on Wednesday, and wasn't allowed back into his home until Saturday.
