KEY POINTS:
A man facing numerous rape charges in Auckland has been named after a court appearance today.
In Auckland District Court this morning, Wiremu Haunui from the east Auckland suburb of Panmure did not ask for continued name suppression after his name was suppressed yesterday to give him time to tell his parents.
However, Judge David Burns refused an application from the New Zealand Press Association to photograph Haunui in court after his lawyer Belinda Sellars said it could prejudice his right to a fair trial where identity could be an issue.
Haunui, 30, is a digger driver.
Earlier today police appealed to sex workers and others "on the fringe of the community" to talk to police if they had been attacked.
Haunui was arrested yesterday for the alleged rape of a woman in suburban Grafton in February last year.
He also faced charges of abduction, possessing a knife and theft.
He was on bail on similar charges involving two prostitutes when he was arrested.
Today he was remanded to appear again in court for pre-depositions next Monday.
