KEY POINTS:
A man on the run since Saturday and described by police as armed and dangerous has been arrested.
The armed offenders squad had been combing a large area after a 30-year-old man stole two cars, one with a rifle in it.
Detective Sergeant Derek Shaw of Alexandra said police were tipped off by a member of the public who saw the man sitting in a stolen ute in South Dunedin at 8.30am.
Police had been searching for the man since Saturday evening when he allegedly stole a vehicle from near Lawrence.
Police stopped the car by using road spikes, but the suspect fled into farmland and avoided arrest.
Later on Saturday night the man then allegedly stole a Toyota Landcruiser ute, which had a .308 rifle and ammunition inside it.
Mr Shaw said, following publicity about the man, a member of the public saw the vehicle in a Dunedin residential street.
The armed offenders squad arrested the man and recovered the gun without incident, he said.
The man is to appear in the Dunedin District Court later today and is expected to face a number of charges relating to burglaries, theft and unlawfully possessing a firearm.
