A Christchurch man was run down in his own front yard last night after a police chase ended with a car smashing through the victim's fence.
Andrew Hose was outside his house with his wife, Mary-Anne, when the car came "screaming around the corner" in their Wainoni street.
His shocked wife described the crash: "I was standing outside talking to my mother and her partner sitting in the car. A car came around the corner about 80km/h, it hit the kerb, then swerved to miss a fence.
"It came around and I started running because I thought it was coming for me and it swerved again to miss the car and hit him (her husband). I'm pretty stressed right now."
Andrew Hose, who was already on crutches with a broken leg, was unable to get out of the way.
Sergeant Stephan McDaniel, of Christchurch, said police were in pursuit of the vehicle for less than a minute before it crashed into the fence.
The chase began after a fight at the Hampshire Hilton pub .
Mrs Hose said her husband had re-broken his leg and the hospital was testing for internal bleeding.
The alleged offender was taken into custody and was to appear in court today facing charges of driving with excess breath alcohol, dangerous driving causing injury and failing to stop.
