A 49-year-old man who died in a car crash near Gisborne on Thursday has today been named as Raymond Edward George Wharehinga.
Mr Wharehinga was the driver and sole occupant of a car that crossed the centre line at Te Arai Bridge in Manutuke, about 15km from central Gisborne, and crashed into a concrete abutment about 10.40pm on Thursday.
He died at the scene.
Police were still investigating the crash but fatigue was thought to be a factor.
It appeared Mr Wharehinga was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The matter has been referred to the coroner.
