A full-scale water rescue is under way in Riverton after a man jumped off a bridge.
Senior sergeant Shona Low of the Southern District Command Centre says both a helicopter and a coastguard rescue team, including two boats and two jet skis, have been scrambled in a search for the 23-year-old.
Low said the man is not known to police but was seen jumping off Riverton Bridge at around 10pm this evening.
"Unfortunately, no one has been able to find him yet, but the search will continue," Low said.
The area is around 30km from Invercargill. The body of water the man jumped into feeds into the Foveaux Strait - the ocean which separates the South Island and Stewart Island.
