KEY POINTS:
A gang member shot by a rival gang in a shootout in Otara last week, has lost an eye and had two shotgun pellets removed from his brain, a court was told today.
The man appeared in Manukau District Court today after he was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and a bedside court hearing was held at Auckland Hospital where he was being treated for his wounds.
Today his lawyer Lorraine Smith said the man had lost an eye and was in constant post-operative pain.
She asked for bail from Judge Gus Andree Wiltens, saying he needed specialist treatment at Greenlane Hospital. She also said he would live at his father's home and be subject to a 24-hour curfew except when he was getting medical treatment.
The judge refused bail and remanded the man, who was also given name suppression, until February 21.
He said other matters were outstanding, there was strong evidence against him and the man was allegedly a member of a gang with other gang members after him.
Two other people involved in the shootout were also remanded in custody until February 21 and given name suppression.
