Police are hunting three youths who attacked a man at the Glen Eden train station in Auckland last night, leaving him seriously injured on the platform.
A member of the public called for help at 5.45pm after finding the 40-year-old bleeding from the head. He was taken to Auckland City Hospital with serious injuries.
Police Inspector Barry Smalley said the man had been assaulted by three males.
The area was cordoned off last night while police conducted a scene examination at the train station. One person was helping police with their inquiries.
An officer at the scene, Sergeant Grant Watson, said a motive for the attack wasn't immediately clear.
"We are unsure at the moment who exactly attacked him or why," he said.
He said it was not clear whether a weapon had been used. "We've only got a couple of people who may have seen what happened," he said.
Trains continued to run last night but commuters were not allowed to get off at Glen Eden station.
