KEY POINTS:
A driver was killed when his van hit centre median barrier poles then struck an overbridge on Auckland's northern motorway early today.
Mark David Bailey, a managing director, of Dairy Flat, north of Auckland, the sole occupant of the van died at the scene.
Police said the Ford Transit was being driven south at Dairy Flat at 6.24am when it hit the barrier poles.
It then veered left across the motorway lanes and struck the Bawden Road overbridge.
Transit inspected the structure of the bridge but no damage was found.
Police said a post mortem examination of Mr Bailey's body would be held later today.
A dog was also in the vehicle and has been placed in animal control care.
