KEY POINTS:
A man is dead and his wife and grandson injured after a truck crashed on State Highway One in the Far North yesterday.
The crash happened in the early afternoon at Ohaeawai, about 11km northeast of Kaikohe.
Kaikohe police Sergeant Rika Wihongi said early indications were that a southbound truck belonging to Waste Works Limited of Kaikohe left the road and crashed.
There appeared to be no other vehicle involved.
"The driver of the vehicle, a 53 year old Kaikohe man, died on impact," Mr Wihongi said.
"The two passengers in the vehicle, the wife of the driver and their grandson, aged approximately 2 years old, were both taken by ambulance to Bay of Islands Hospital with what were believed to be moderate injuries.
"They were both subsequently transferred to Whangarei Hospital where their condition is described as stable."
Mr Wihongi said investigations into the cause of the crash were continuing.
"All occupants of the vehicle were wearing restraints; however there was no safety seat in the vehicle," he said.
