A man died yesterday when he was hit by a southbound commuter train between Middlemore and Papatoetoe stations about 10.40am.
Senior Sergeant Spencer Matthews of Counties Manukau police said the man was hit some distance from both stations. The incident was not suspicious.
The Fire Service and OnTrack staff helped police remove the body from the scene, which was not cleared until 1.15pm.
The man did not have any identification on him, and people at nearby properties did not know him.
He was described as a Polynesian, in his 30s, with curly black receding hair. He was unshaven and wearing a dark-blue polo shirt, dark trousers and Jandals.
"Police hope that someone will recognise the description so his family can be advised," said Constable Damon O'Shaughnessy, the officer in charge of the investigation.
