The 21-year-old man killed as he walked along the middle of the highway between Timaru and Temuka last night has been named by police.
He was Anthony Foster Grant of Timaru.
Alcohol and dark clothing are believed to have contributed to the death of Mr Grant who was hit by two vehicles while walking on State Highway One after getting out of a car following an argument.
He was walking near the centre line in a southerly direction and a northbound vehicle took evasive action and managed to successfully avoid him, police said today.
But as the woman driver called police on her cellphone Mr Grant was struck by two vehicles travelling south.
It was believed that Mr Grant had been drinking and was wearing dark clothing, making it difficult to see him on an unlit part of the road.
