A Palmerston North man died early today when a vehicle rolled near Taupo.
He was Troy Colin Sanson, 43, a lawnmowing contractor and father of three. Another man in the vehicle escaped uninjured.
Taupo police said the crash happened about 4am on Tukairangi Road, Taupo.
They said a Holden vehicle with two occupants was travelling south when it left the road, collided with a fence and then rolled.
The dead man was wearing his seatbelt.
Taupo Serious Crash Unit is investigating, but said speed appeared to have been a contributing factor to the crash.
Road and weather conditions were fine.
Police are seeking a woman who was at the crash scene but left before police arrived.
She was described as wearing blue pyjamas and a full length coat. She was driving a white 4x4 vehicle similar to a Nissan Terrano.
