Police have named the man who died after the car he was driving collided with a truck on State Highway One, north of Bankside in the Canterbury region.
The man was George Barclay Aitkin, 84, of Ashburton.
The crash happened at about 5pm yesterday.
State Highway One was closed while heavy lifting equipment was brought in to move the truck and trailer last night.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to call Constable Christopher MacPherson of the Leeston Police on (03) 378 0150
