The girl is in a stable condition at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital.
Three other people, the girl's step-mother and her two young children, both under three, escaped the blaze unhurt.
A post mortem is under way in Auckland to determine the cause of Mr Joseph's death.
The investigation into what caused the fire is continuing.

Fire officer Kevin Hickey told TV3 that candles may have caused the fire. They were being used by the family when power was cut during the weekend's storm.
