The person found dead at the scene of a Christchurch house fire this week has been named as unemployed homeless man Terence James Palmer, aged 62.
Police said provisional findings from a post-mortem examination conducted yesterday indicated the man died in the Peterborough St blaze from smoke inhalation and there was no indication he had been assaulted.
Detective Sergeant John Gallagher said: "However the investigation is ongoing and we are continuing to interview witnesses. We are not yet in a position to make a final determination on how the fire started.''
