Man killed in apparent hit-and-run

Police are investigating a possible hit-and-run after the body of a man was found in the middle of a Northland road early today.

The body was discovered around 5.10am by a member of the public in the middle of the eastern lane of State Highway 12 west of Maungaturoto township, 64km south of Whangarei.

The area is known locally as the 'S' bends.

Police said it appeared as if the victim had been struck and run over by a vehicle.

The road was partially closed and diversions were in place.

The fatal crash team and emergency services were in attendance.
