The man who died after being struck by two heavy trucks on a state highway in Waikato early Sunday morning may have been lying on the road before suffering his fatal injuries, Waikato police says.
Derek Douglas, 32, was on the state highway 39 in Pirongia, when he was run over by two milk tank trucks at about 1am, police said.
District Road policing manager Inspector Freda Grace said investigation was ongoing and it was "inappropriate to elaborate further at this stage.
What I can say however is that Sunday's tragedy serves to remind us that all road users are vulnerable, no matter if you are on foot, two, four or even more wheels," she said.
Drivers of the trucks were fully cooperating with police.
