KEY POINTS:
A 20-year-old man was killed instantly after being hit by a Wellington commuter train last night.
The incident occurred at Horokiwi, about 1km south of the Petone overbridge on State Highway 2, about 8.40pm.
Inspector Marty Parker, of police central communications, said it appeared the man had been walking along the track in the dark when he was hit by the southbound train.
The driver of the train was badly shaken by the incident, he said.
The victim has not been named as next of kin have yet to be informed.
