A man is dead after his car crashed into a concrete culvert north of Gisborne this morning.
The man's car hit a drain then went into the culvert on State Highway 2 about 5km north of Gisborne about 7.15am, Senior Sergeant Tony Gibson told NZPA.
The culvert was empty of water.
The man was the only person in the car, and no other vehicle was involved, Mr Gibson said.
The accident occurred outside the weekend road fatalities time frame of 4pm Friday to 6am Monday.
The only reported weekend death was a woman killed yesterday afternoon after the vehicle she was in rolled in Northland.
Four other people survived the crash which happened on State Highway 10 near Kerikeri, Inspector Barry Smalley of northern police communications said.
Three were injured with one flown to hospital and two taken by road.
On Thursday and Friday last week six people were killed on New Zealand roads.
