A man who walked into a bedroom and stabbed his sleeping younger brother in the stomach after a quarrel has been jailed for five years.
The 25-year-old man was sentenced in Palmerston District Court on Friday after being convicted of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Both brothers were given name suppression at the request of the 22-year-old victim, the Manawatu Standard reported.
Judge Gerard Lynch said the night before the stabbing in May the pair had been at a party together when an altercation took place.
While at the pub the following night, the intoxicated older brother said he wanted to bash his brother and stab everyone else.
He then went home, grabbed a butchers knife, walked into the bedroom, held the knife above his head and stabbed his brother once in the stomach.
A struggle erupted and the victim was also headbutted and punched.
