A Nelson man who gave a 14-year-old girl cannabis and alcohol and then had sex with her was yesterday jailed for 16 months.
Michael Lucky Tulouna, 39, a labourer, earlier admitted having sex with an underage girl, and supplying cannabis to a person aged under 18.
He also admitted separate charges of intimidation, and resisting police.
Judge Robert Kerr said Tulouna knew the 14-year-old and her parents.
On March 26, he went to their home and gave the girl two "tinnies" of cannabis.
He also allowed her to smoke a cannabis joint he had, before going to her bedroom, where they drank bourbon and cola.
They then went to a neighbouring house and had consensual sex.
Judge Kerr said the girl, who was vulnerable because of her age, had been traumatised by Tulouna's actions.
"What you did was particularly cruel because of her age, and you abused a position of trust with her family."
But he believed that Tulouna was sorry for what he did, and that the offending was not premeditated.
