A man has been jailed for speeding down a Hamilton street with a man clinging to his bonnet and then running him over after an alcohol-fuelled dispute.
Daniel Stretch, 47, appeared for sentence in the High Court in Hamilton yesterday after earlier pleading guilty to charges of causing grievous bodily harm and assault with a weapon, the Waikato Times reported.
The charges related to an incident last November when Stretch became involved in a drunken argument with his girlfriend's boarder.
Stretch, who was sitting in his car, revved the engine and drove at the boarder, lifting him on to the bonnet.
He drove down the wrong side of the road for about 100 metres until the boarder fell off, and then drove over the man, causing serious chest and internal injuries.
Justice Rebecca Ellis sentenced him to five years' jail, saying he was lucky the boarder had not received more serious injuries.
