KEY POINTS:
A Wellington man was today jailed for seven years for raping a friend's partner.
Malcolm Christopher Bradley, 28, was earlier found guilty by a jury of rape and unlawful sexual connection.
His lawyer, Kevin Smith, told Wellington District Court he had a history of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Mr Smith said on the night of the rape, May 6 2007, Bradley was intoxicated and had taken illegal as well as prescription drugs.
He said mitigating factors in the incident was that apart from the attack itself, there was no other serious violence involved or kidnapping.
Judge Ian Mill said an aggravating factor in sentencing was Bradley maintaining his innocence and claiming the victim had lied and the two had consensual sex.
She had trusted Bradley as a friend of her partner and Bradley "betrayed that trust".
Judge Mill also noted Bradley had shown no remorse for his actions.
Bradley was sentenced to seven years for rape and two years for unlawful sexual connection, to be served concurrently.
