A 33-year-old Australian father of two who sliced his former father-in-law's hand with a large machete near Dunedin has been jailed for six and a half years.
Shaan Roker appeared in the High Court at Dunedin for sentence, after pleading guilty to charges of wounding with grievous bodily harm and assaulting a female in May.
It comes after a heated incident in Taieri Mouth in February, when Roker moved back in with the mother of their two children. Roker struck her head with his elbow and hand, before grabbing a machete and bringing it down above the male victim's head.
The victim blocked the machete with his arm, causing the blade to severe almost completely through above his wrist.
Crown prosecutor Richard Smith said the male victim was using a crutch at the time, making him particularly vulnerable. Defence counsel Anne Stevens said Roker was instantly remorseful after the attack.
