An 18-year-old Timaru man has been sentenced to nine months jail for being in possession of home-made bombs.
Daniel James Mitchell was sentenced in Timaru District Court yesterday for unlawfullly possessing explosives, the Timaru Herald reported today.
In June, police found two home-made explosive devices hidden under a carport at a Timaru property.
A glass bottle and a butane gas container were found inside a cooler bag, which was wrapped in a towel.
The bottle had three separate chemicals and was designed to explode on impact when the bottle was thrown.
The butane gas container was filled with nails, screws and bolts, a nitrous oxide canister and two explosive substances.
Mitchell denied the charge and said he had been hiding the bombs for someone else.
Mitchell's lawyer, Teresa Lawrence, said her client had moved out of town to get away from gang affiliations and had made positive changes in his life since the incident.
