A man who falsified details on his GST return has been sentenced to nine months' jail.
Roger Brown was sentenced in the Hawera District Court yesterday for deliberately falsifying details in his GST returns, Inland Revenue said.
During an IRD investigation, it was revealed Brown had claimed expenses of $175,000 related to purchasing a truck, but no truck had ever been bought.
He falsely claimed to be a courier driver and then a long haul freight driver, Investigations and Advice group manager Karen Whitiskie said.
Over a two-year period, he obtained $24,045 in payments to which he was not entitled.
