Man jailed for eight years for 'severe assault' of Taumarunui man

A man has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison for an assault that left his victim in a coma for two weeks.

Wallace Schimanski, 45, received the sentence in the Hamilton District Court this week. He pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police were called to Miro St, in Hamilton, on May 1 last year.

At the time, it was reported the 42-year-old victim's injuries were so severe he was unable to speak to officers for several days.

Detective Sergeant Scott Ivimey said the "cowardly attack'' left the victim in a critical condition.

"The victim was flown to the intensive care unit at Waikato Hospital and remained in a coma for two weeks.

"We hope the sentencing provides some closure to the victim, who is still recovering from his extensive and life-altering injuries."

Schimanski's victim today receives ongoing support for his injuries.

Ivimey praised the work of officers involved in the case.

"Thanks to the excellent work carried out by the investigation team, this dangerous offender has been removed from our streets.''
