Pointing a gun at a former partner has earned a Nelson man six years' jail for attempted murder.
Paul David Garlick, 48, was sentenced in the High Court at Nelson yesterday after a jury found him guilty last month.
Justice Wild told the court Garlick went to Nelson's Placemakers store last March 18 and pointed a .22 rifle at his former partner, whose name is suppressed, while she sat alone in a smoko area, the Nelson Mail reported.
A colleague saw Garlick, tackled him and pushed the rifle aside.
Garlick was out on bail after breaching a trespass order the day before.
Justice Wild said the event had had a huge impact on the woman, who later urged others being stalked to tell people what was happening.
Garlick also admitted two charges of criminal harassment against the woman, committed on March 15 and 16 last year, and was sentenced to six months in prison on those charges, to be served concurrently.
