Man injured in Waikato firearms incident

One person is in serious condition following a firearms incident in Waikato tonight.

Senior sergeant Mike Stopforth, speaking at the scene on Golf Rd in Mangatawhiri, said police received a call about 9pm from a male that had been shot.

The man, who was shot in the leg, has now been taken to Middlemore Hospital in serious condition.

A photographer at the scene said the incident appeared to have taken place in or near a car that was parked under a bridge on the side of the road, near the Maramarua Golf Club.

Mr Stopforth said detectives were examining the car and would be speaking with the person who had been shot to ascertain exactly what happened.

Investigations are continuing, he said.

St John Ambulance were requested by police at 9.13pm, a spokesman for the ambulance service said.

He confirmed one patient was taken to Middlemore Hospital in serious condition after the ambulance arrived on scene at 9.37pm.
