A man in his 30s received a cut to the front of his head when he was allegedly assaulted with a tomahawk on a street in Raureka, Hastings, about 1am yesterday.
The incident was reported to police by Hawke's Bay Hospital staff after the man made his own way there for treatment.
"Our initial information is that [the tomahawk] was thrown at the victim," Senior Sergeant Mike Stevenson said.
"It appears he went to hospital on his own accord with an injury to the front of his head. He was discharged and left on his own."
Mr Stevenson said the incident was "isolated" and did not appear to be linked to recent gang fights in Camberley, where tomahawks were seized.
Details, including why the man was allegedly assaulted, were unclear.
"As far as I'm aware the CIB has not been able to track down the victim," he said.
It seemed likely the other party was in some way related to the alleged assault victim, Mr Stevenson said.
