A man suffered serious head injuries when his car slammed into a wall during a meeting at Te Marua Speedway, near Upper Hutt, tonight.
The Wellington-based Westpac rescue helicopter transported the seriously injured driver from the speedway to Wellington Hospital just after 9pm.
Helicopter crewman Dave Greenberg said that on arrival the helicopter's crew found several Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics treating the 34-year-old Upper Hutt man.
"As I understand it the car slammed into a wall on a turn at the south end of the track" Mr Greenberg said.
"Apparently the collision was so severe that the fire brigade had to extricate the man from the car."
The man suffered serious head injuries and was being treated and assessed in the Wellington Hospital emergency department.
