A man is in hospital after his light truck crashed through a bridge barrier and tumbled four metres onto a stream bank in the Hawkes Bay.
A 25-year-old man was airlifted to Hawke's Bay Hospital in Hastings following this morning's accident, and is being assessed for multiple injuries.
Initial reports suggests the vehicle, travelling towards Hastings on rural Waimarama Rd, may have failed to take a bend before entering the Maraetotara Bridge. The Hawkes Bay police serious crash unit is assessing the scene this afternoon to formally establish the cause of the crash.
Havelock North volunteer fire crew were the first on the scene about 11am, near the intersection of Waimarama and Maraetotara roads, 10km east of Hastings city. The fire crew used hydraulic equipment to free the driver from the wreckage.
St John intensive care paramedics then treated the driver before he was flown to hospital by the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter.
