Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr of Masterton police said the man was the sole occupant of the car which lost control when it failed to take a left hand bend in the road around 3.30pm.
Police were about 500m behind the car when it crashed near the intersection of Paierau Rd and Akura Rd on the outskirts of Masterton.
Police are seeking witnesses who saw either the car speeding prior to the crash or the crash itself.
The car was driving at speed on Paierau Rd toward Masterton when a police patrol car spotted it. The patrol was travelling in the opposite direction and had to turn to follow the speeding motorist.
The car, a Ford Falcon, hit a ditch and became airborne before coming to a stop and the driver was thrown from the vehicle.
