Man injured after Christmas party assault

A 30-year-old man is in hospital after a serious assault at Napier's Taradale Club last night.

Police were called to the work Christmas function at 9.50pm, Sergeant Steve Murray told NZPA.

The assault happened in the parking lot of the club but it was not clear what had caused the fight.

The victim was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital with critical head injuries, Mr Murray said.

A small section of Wharerangi Road remains sealed off as police investigations continue.

Police are speaking to a man about the incident.
