A Wellington man is in hospital with serious injuries after being assaulted in the city early this morning.
The man, aged in his early 40s, left work on the Terrace at 5.30am and walked through Gilmore Terrace to Boulcott Street, Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Miller said.
"The victim got halfway down Boulcott Street outside the Baptist Church where there appears an altercation has taken place. As a result, the victim has received serious injuries."
He was taken to Wellington Hospital where he underwent surgery, and remained in the intensive care unit.
Police said the victim was wearing a grey, long-sleeved, striped shirt, faded blue jeans, a grey cotton jacket and a black adidas backpack.
