A man is in Waikato Hospital being treated for blood loss and a hand injury following an armed offenders callout to the village of Waharoa, 53km east of Hamilton.
Waikato District Operations Manager, Inspector John Kelly, said police were originally called after reports of an attempted suicide.
"Officers arrived to find a man in a sleepout with a bleeding hand holding a high powered rifle. They took the right tactical options in withdrawing and awaiting back up and the Armed Offenders Squad was called in to secure the property."
Police negotiators convinced the man to give himself up and he was taken away by ambulance for treatment to his hand injury and for psychiatric assessment.
