A man is in custody after police received reports of a man with a gun at an address in Mt Albert.
The man left the house on Fontenoy St and was pulled over by police a short distance away.
An nzherald.co.nz reader said the man was in a red car and was pulled over by armed police outside Gladstone Primary School on Seaview Tce, two streets away.
The Armed Offenders Squad was called to a house in Fontenoy St at around 10.30am and neighbours reported seeing about eight police cars
Police cordoned off the street and evacuated nearby homes.
A woman and child were seen being escorted from the home by police but Senior Sergeant George Fanamanu said it was not a hostage situation.
He said no shots were fired and a man was "helping police with their inquiries".
A neighbour told nzherald.co.nz there were a lot of police around.
She said she was only a few houses down from where the incident was taking place but had not been contacted by police.
"The neighbours are sitting out on their porch looking down the street," she said.
The woman said she passed the house coming back from the shops at about 11am and noticed three police cars.
A television camera man filming the AOS entering the house has complained to police after an AOS squad member attacked his camera.
Bradley Ambrose, working for TV3, was filming the incident from a property across the road after gaining permission from the property's occupants.
He managed to film the AOS going into the house but afterwards an AOS squad member walked over to him and ripped the battery pack off the back of his camera, which deleted his footage.
Mr Ambrose said the officer refused to give his badge number.
Mr Ambrose complained to Senior Sergeant George Fanamanu who said he would pass on a request for an apology.
