Man in custody after police chase ends on Wellington beach

A man is in custody following a police chase that ended on a Wellington beach this morning.

Central police communications Inspector John Spence said about 5.25am today, a stolen Toyota surf utility vehicle was spotted by police in Paekakariki, Wellington.

The vehicle failed to stop for police and then drove through Haywards Hill Road, before it made a u-turn and headed back towards Paraparaumu, Mr Spence said.

"Spikes were deployed in Paekakariki and it went through the spikes, which deflated three of the tyres," Mr Spence said.

"The driver then kept on driving at slow to medium speed with flat tyres through Raumati, onto Paraparaumu beach."

Mr Spence said the driver continued along the beach until he finally stopped the car and tried to escape on foot.

The man was caught soon after by a police dog handler, he said.

Mr Spence said the man was now in police custody.
