An "extremely intoxicated" male is in police custody after he made false claims about a firearm incident in central Whanganui tonight.
Police were called to the scene of the alleged incident on Victoria Ave just after 8pm.
A spokesman for Whanganui police said the male was now detoxing at the station after it was found there was no validity to his claims that shots were fired.
He said police were considering whether charges would be laid for wasting police time.
Ambulance were also on their way to scene but were stood down prior to arrival, a St John Ambulance spokesman said.
