A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a fight in front of up to 40 people outside at Auckland nightclub early this morning.
The man, Anthony Bruce, aged 29, is in Auckland Hospital's critical care unit with severe brain injuries.
Police said the attack followed an argument and fight between two groups in a carpark outside Glen Eden's Spoilers Karaoke Niteclub in Glenmall Place about 1.15 am today.
Mr Bruce suffered at least three skull fractures and body bruising. Police say a number of people could have been involved. A weapon is believed to have been used but police do not know what type.
A team of investigators, led by Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Bush, has been formed to investigate and is appealing for witnesses to come forward.
The attack was at first not thought to be so serious and before a cordon was put up, rain washed away some evidence.
Detective Senior Sergeant Bush said it was critical police spoke to the up to 40 witness present at the time.
Two private video surveillance cameras - often crucial in helping detectives corroborate witness evidence - were in the area but did not have film inside them.
A 21-year-old man has appeared in the Waitakere District Court today charged with assault.
He was remanded without plea in custody to reappear on April 9. Police are considering further charges.
