KEY POINTS:
A 49-year-old labourer appeared in North Shore District Court this morning charged with attempted sexual violation and burglary of a 73-year-old woman in her Northland home on Wednesday.
The man, who was granted interim name suppression, entered no plea and was remanded in custody until July 19.
Police said earlier that the woman was asleep in her home at Mangawhai, about 60km south of Whangarei, on Wednesday when an intruder carrying a knife entered her bedroom.
She awoke and wrestled the knife from the man and stabbed him in the left forearm and right thigh.
Despite his injuries, the man allegedly attempted to sexually attack her before fleeing.
