Sydney, March 12 AAP - A New Zealand mother of two died on a neighbour's doorstep after being stabbed a number of times outside her home, police have told a Sydney court.
Sharna De-Courcey, 20, was attacked after 40-year-old Maumaga Leiataua allegedly broke into her house in Whalan, in Sydney's west, about 7am yesterday.
Police say Leiataua, who was armed with a 20cm-long knife, then chased Ms De-Courcey into the street as she fled the house.
She suffered multiple stab wounds to the stomach before collapsing on the doorstep of a neighbour's house.
Police said Ms De-Courcey had died before ambulance officers arrived.
Leiataua, of Tregear, in Sydney's west, was arrested in the street shortly after the attack and later charged with one count of murder and one count of aggravated break and enter with intent to commit a serious indictable offence.
Leiataua chose to remain in the prison holding cells during a brief mention of the matter in Mt Druitt Local Court today.
He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused by Magistrate Paul Lyon.
Outside court, police said Ms De-Courcey and Leiataua were known to each other but were not related.
Ms De-Courcey's children were being cared for by a relative at the time of the attack.
Leiataua was remanded to face Central Local Court on May 17.
