A man facing a raft of charges after an alleged domestic-related kidnapping and assault last week was remanded in custody today.
Stephen Brent Tozer, 48, a short, stocky man with shaven head, was remanded for two days to allow him to apply for bail.
Lawyer Michael Starling told Judge John Bisphan Tozer there were "complicated issues" relating to bail and a hearing would be required.
Tozer, whose appearance in the dock at Christchurch District Court lasted less than two minutes, faces nine charges.
These include two of kidnapping a woman and unlawfully detaining a man, assaulting a female, having an air rifle during a kidnapping, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and car conversion.
Mr Starling told the court Tozer wanted to be tried on all matters.
Judge Bisphan remanded him in custody until Wednesday for a bail hearing.
Police allege Tozer used a piece of wood and a gas cylinder to beat another man before kidnapping him.
The man is accused of earlier assaulting his former partner at their home in Rakaia, Canterbury, said Detective Scott Anderson.
The woman left the property and the man is said to have tracked her to a farm cottage where she was staying with another man near Windwhistle, Mr Anderson said.
It is alleged the man assaulted the woman before she escaped and beat the man with a piece of wood and a 3kg gas cylinder.
Mr Anderson said the woman ran about 100m to a nearby farm house to call police.
The man is alleged to have bundled the beaten man into his car and left the cottage.
Police from Darfield, about 25km away, caught up with Tozer and chased him for up to 5kms, Mr Anderson said.
He said the male victim was taken to hospital with gashes on his head. He was discharged yesterday.
Mr Anderson said the man will be appearing in the Christchurch District Court today "and police will be opposing bail".
