KEY POINTS:
A man will appear in Christchurch District Court this morning after a hit-and-run outside a city party that left a 29-year-old man badly injured.
Police last night would not reveal what charges had been laid but said the man gave himself up yesterday following the incident outside a 21st birthday party in suburban Phillipstown early on Sunday morning.
The victim was struck by a car and dragged 25m before the vehicle was driven off.
He was taken to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries including suspected broken legs, a broken pelvis, punctured lung, broken ribs and a damaged liver. He was placed in an induced coma.
Police said that his condition of the man had improved, but he remains in intensive care.
They said that a fight broke out at the party, which spilled onto the street. Bottles, a baseball bat and "possibly iron bars" were involved.
It was believed the injured man was involved in the fight.
A neighbour told The Press the loud party was interrupted by yelling and screaming.
"I just went outside and I saw him (the victim) lying on the road with people standing around him," the neighbour said.
