Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was found unconscious with serious head injuries on Auckland's Karangahape Road early yesterday.
The 40-year-old suffered the injuries near Pitt Street between 5.15am and 5.45am on Saturday, Detective Sergeant Neil Hilton said.
It was not yet known what caused the injuries, he told NZPA.
The man was put into an induced coma at Auckland Hospital, and police were still trying to establish what happened to him.
There were many possibilities as a number of bars would still be open in Karangahape Rd at that time of the morning, Mr Hilton said.
It was not clear whether he was attacked, but police had ruled out the possibility he had been hit by a car.
Anyone in the area at the time of the incident or who knew anything about how the man was injured should contact police.
