A man in his 20s has been pulled from the Hokitika Gorge and will be rushed to hospital.
Emergency services were called to the incident near Whitcombe Valley Road at about 6.25pm.
A police spokeswoman said a rescue helicopter was on its way to transport the man to hospital.
The condition of the man is not yet known.
