Man hurt in Wairarapa home invasion

Two men were due to appear in court yesterday in relation to a home invasion in Kahutara which left a man hospitalised with head injuries and concussion.

Police allege the men, aged 23 and 24, forced their way into a rural home at about 10pm on Tuesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Bysouth said after entering the house and demanding money the men "set about" the homeowner, punching and kicking him while he was on the ground.

The victim required hospital treatment for head injuries, concussion and bruising but was discharged the next day.

Nobody deserved to feel unsafe in their own home, Mr Bysouth said.

"No matter what the circumstances are, everyone deserves to feel safe and be safe in their own home.

"An invasion of this nature at that time of night is a terrifying experience, particularly when it results in injury requiring hospital treatment."

Mr Bysouth said the police investigation began after a 111 call for help.

After a scene examination was conducted on Wednesday, police identified two men believed to be responsible for the attack, Mr Bysouth said.

The alleged attackers and the victim were known to each other.

Police were happy to have made the arrests so quickly after the crime, he said.

"I am extremely pleased that we have been able to bring this to a speedy resolution and prevented further torment to our victim in this case.

"We are sincerely driven to prevent any kind of crime and wish to reassure the public that we will take any allegation reported to us very seriously," Mr Bysouth said.

Two Featherston men have been charged with burglary and assault with intent to rob and were due to appear in Masterton District Court yesterday afternoon.
