A man was taken to hospital with burns to his hands after a "spectacular" house fire in Dunedin this morning.
Firefighters had to remove a gas cylinder from the single storey private dwelling, which was left extensively damaged.
Dunedin fire safety officer Barry Gibson said three fire engines raced to the Northeast Valley suburb house after the callout at 10.10am.
A man in the house, aged in his mid-30s, received burns to his hands and was taken to hospital for a check-up, but no one else was hurt.
The blaze was brought quickly under control and firefighters were dampening hot spots late this morning, Mr Gibson told NZPA.
"Firefighters had to deal with a gas cylinder that was removed from the premises and taken outside to cool down," he said.
The cause of the blaze was being investigated.
"It was pretty straightforward really," Mr Gibson said. "There was quite a spectacular lot of smoke seen from all over the city."
